Today’s park used to be the Castle’s outer defensive courtyard. It has always been a space directly connected to the Castle and has always constituted itd integral part. The park s located at the highest point and offers an axcellent view of the Kvarner Bay, the hinterland and the Rječina canyon.

For centuries, it was used for the purpose of defence and as a space for utilities and farming: for instance, vineyards were planted here according to historical accounts. At the end of the 19th century and after the construction of the Decrevi house, it became a park.

The degree of conservation od the park from that period such that it can be recognized only in the fragments of the spatial composition, the grouping of old trees and the stone sub-walls of the plots, as well as the peripheral bulwarks and stone fences.

Today’s park is not specifically designed in terms od style, but is an open space for recreation, inside which there is also a bocce court and a restaurant, and in its southern part there is a green area with the remains of the historical stone structures. Autochthonous species of deciduous and evergreen trees resistant to local climate conditions tower over the park.

The cedars, cypresses, nettle trees and lime trees indicate that ornamental plants characteristic of the hosrticulture of this region were also brought in, and that they have adapted to the specificities of the habitat.

Interesting fact:

In the park, there are also the remains of a stable (passage towards the Castle) and a stone niche, which can be noticed by observing carefully. The bulwarks bordering the park on the north and east sides, as well as the Northeast Tower, are an important part of the park’s identity and character.
