Rijeka’s war story takes tourists beneath the city

How many times have you stepped inside a military facility as a tourist? Rijeka offers a rare opportunity to do exactly that. And takes you straight underground. The first military tunnel in Rijeka that is open to tourists awaits you in the city centre. The entrance to the tunnel, which is open to visitors, is located next to the Cathedral of St. Vitus and extends beneath the Old Town of Rijeka to the courtyard of the Dolac Primary School. The 330 metre-long tunnel was dug by the Italian Army at the beginning of WWII. Why? To protect the citizens from bombing.

You can see the original signs “Reserved for air defence” in a few places inside. It was used during the attack on the city by Allied aircraft in 1944 and 1945. Today, it has been repurposed as a tourist attraction.
