Art Neighbourhood
Art Neighbourhood is a cultural neighbourhood in the heart of the city in an erstwhile industrial oasis dubbed “Benčić” by the local populace. The complex dates back to the 18th century with the construction of the Sugar Refinery on this part of the Rijeka shore. It was succeeded by the Tobacco Factory and ultimately by the “Rikard” engine factory. The industrial scenario has given way to a cultural neighbourhood and the location has been completely repurposed. This has led to its rebirth, a new life springing forth from the ashes of the factory by literally and symbolically integrating it into itself. “Benčić” was operational until 1995.
Located in the ART NEIGHBOURHOOD are the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the City Museum of Rijeka, the City Library and the “Children’s House”. With the opening of the Children’s House, Rijeka became the first city in Croatia to build a large and beautifully…
