Thanks to its exceptional geographic location, Rijeka is located at the intersection of several key transport routes, so that staying here offers the possibility of going on a number of excursions:
On the western side of Rijeka there is one of the most important tourist destinations of Croatia – the Opatija Riviera which can be reached by bus line 32. Volosko, Lovran, Mošćenička Draga… (bus lines 32 and 32A) are just close by, and you don’t want to miss the “town on the hill” – Kastav (bus lines 18 and 18B).
On the east side you can visit the typical coastal towns such as Bakar, Bakarac, Kraljevica and the Riviera of Crikvenica and Novi Vinodolski… that can be reached by suburban bus lines from the bus station on Žabica.
The “Golden Island” – the island of Krk, is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Croatia, and an excursion to this island is easy to organise from Rijeka, you just take the bus from the central bus station and you’ll be there in about an hour. There you can taste white wine – Žlahtina, a variety indigenous to Krk, as well as their traditional dish – šurlice (a type of homemade pasta).
In the far north of Kvarner, 10 km away from Rijeka, there is the Town of Grobnik (bus line 15), which is certainly worth a visit. Nearby you’ll find the unique ski resort of Platak overlooking the sea, the “Grobnik Alps” for climbing lovers, as well as the picturesque village of Sveti Martin with the mill on the river Rječina that is still in operation.
To nature lovers we would certainly recommend a visit to the Učka Nature Park from whose highest peak (1,401 m) you can enjoy the view of the entire Kvarner.
By suburban buses you can reach the greenest part of Kvarner – Gorski Kotar, an ideal place for relaxing walks in the countryside and enjoying the local culinary specialties.
