The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage centre of Western Croatia. Its foundation is reported to be, according to tradition, related to the miraculous transport of the Nazareth Barn, and its stay on Trsat (1291 – 1294). Shortly after the relocation of the Mother of God’s house to Loreto, Prince Nikola I of Krk built the first small church on the place where the barn stood on Trsat.
Whilst in Rijeka, Trsat is a must-see place – a part of the city situated on a hill above Rijeka that offers a spectacular view of the entire Kvarner. Mentioned for the first time in 799, Trsat is an ideal place for a walk, for having a coffee and sightseeing. Particularly the Trsat Castle which dates back to the prehistoric times when it was just a watchtower. Its present appearance is the merit of its last owner, Count Laval Nugent, who bought it in the first half of the 19th century, renovating it into a family mausoleum.

Along the back side of the parish office in Trsat you can come to the oldest Trsat church – St. George the Martyr’s. The access road is typically paved with sea pebbles, which was common up to the late 19th century. The present appearance of the church is the result of the reconstruction carried out in the 19th century, however, the remains of the original building that lay hidden in its archaeological strata were mentioned in the 13th century, but probably belong to an even earlier period. Its location indicates that its origin is linked to the Castle.

Located on the hostel’s premises is the well-known cafe Beertija where tourists can enjoy sipping coffee or spend a pleasant evening by choosing from a wide assortment of Croatian and foreign alcoholic drinks and beer. The hostel has three multi-bedroom rooms, two quadruples, and one with seven beds. All rooms have a private bathroom, security cabinet and a light over every bed.
Trsat Park extends covers an area stretching from 95 to 145 metres above sea level. This small part of nature preserved in the city was created in the period between the two world wars (in 1926) according to the design of following the project architect, Zlatko Prikril and the horticultural expert, Josip Kulfanek, known famous for his use of planting autochthonous plants and respecting the park’s natural rocky landscape.
In the northwest corner of Titov Square stands a Baroque chapel with a relief of Madonna with the Child on its front. This passable chapel resembles a small triumphal arch and marks the beginning of the Petar Kružić Stairway that lead to the famous pilgrimage centre, the Franciscan monastery at Trsat. The steps were built in 1531 by order of Warlord Petar Kružić, and were built up over the centuries (up to today’s over 500 steps) and adorned with votive chapels.
