Trsat Castle

The Trsat Castle represents a strategically embossed lookout on a hill 138 meters above sea level dominating Rijeka. It was mentioned as a parochial centre for the first time in 1288. At this same site there was a Liburnian observation post from prehistoric times, used for monitoring the roads leading from the hinterland to the coast.

The Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast which preserves the features of the early medieval town construction.

Today the Trsat Castle has been enriched by new facilities and events – visual arts gallery, permanent installation on castle’s history and open-air summer concerts and theatre performances. How to get to Trsat Castle?

There are two ways to reach Trsat Castle. From the city center of Rijeka to Trsat, bus line number 2 operates, and the timetable is available on the official Autotrolej website (see here). The nearest stop is at the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, from where it is easy to walk to the Castle by following the signposts. More information about the Shrine is available here. For those who enjoy walking, the Castle can also be reached on foot via the Trsat Stairs, which connect the city center with Trsat.
