Park Nike Katunar, designed by Zdenko Kolacio and Zdenko Sila (1951), was arranged in a contemporary landscape style using native plants resistant to specific climatic conditions.
On June 3, 1980, a stone lantern was placed in the park — a gift from the city of Kawasaki — standing three meters tall and weighing six tons, handcrafted by Japanese stonemasonry masters.
In front of it, two marble plaques were placed: – one engraved with a dedication from the then-mayor of Kawasaki, Mr. Saburo Ito, with the inscription “Friendship Cities” and the other with the inscription: “As a symbol of friendship, this commemorative lantern was gifted to Rijeka by the city of Kawasaki, Japan.”
