The centre of Rijeka will be home to a new specialised museum – the JGL Pharmacy Museum, where the global and local development of pharmacy is presented in a new and innovative way.
Its permanent exhibit covers ten interconnected units. The most notable ones are Hortus Sanitatis (“the Garden of Health”) that has live plants, a timeline made of glass showing 18 important events from the history of pharmacy, a display of the development of pharmacy in Rijeka, the front-end space (oficina) of an early 20th-century pharmacy, and a medicinal herbs section that showcases the entire process from growing a plant to using it for producing medications.
The museum was founded by the pharmaceutical company Jadran Galenski laboratorij d.d. Rijeka in collaboration with Rijeka City Museum.
Among its special attractions are multimedia installations that include a talking 3D snake as a symbol of pharmacy, a 3D pharmacist named Pablo, and 2D figures of notable scientists such as Galen, Paracelsus, Vladimir Prelog, etc.
