Matej Knežević: Manus Lateri Sinistri
At Filodrammatica Gallery (Korzo 28/1, Rijeka), from 4 to 25 September, a solo exhibition by award-winning visual artist and physician Matej Knežević will be presented. Entitled Manus Lateri Sinistri, the exhibition features a series of paintings created with his non-dominant left hand.
In the artist’s words, the aim of this intervention is to train the non-dominant hand through artistic activity in order to enhance it for medical application, “since developing the skill of the left hand is particularly useful in contemporary surgical techniques that demand a high level of bimanuality.”
The works are made with iodine solution, otherwise used for sterilizing the skin before surgery, while their motifs are based on Wes Anderson’s film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, in which the protagonist is driven by the desire to transform a painstakingly trained ability into a benefit for society.
Organized by Drugo more, the exhibition opens on Thursday, 4 September at 8 PM, preceded by a conversation with Matej Knežević led by Rijeka-based contemporary artist Igor Eškinja at 7 PM.
