SUMMARY:Otherness - exhibition from the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art
DESCRIPTION:From 12 June 2024\, with the opening of the summer exhibition “Otherness”\, Kortil Gallery will be presenting over thirty works of art from the National Museum of Modern Art (NMMU).\nThrough the selection of works by our leading artists\, the exhibition delves into the concept of «otherness»\, offering fresh perspectives and potential interpretations of artworks created from the latter half of the 19th century onward. The concept of the NMMU curator Marta Radman focuses on exploration and interpretation of social contexts\, artists’ self-censorship\, and the significance of gender and gender identity in creative expression. These themes are addressed through the lense of feminism\, decolonization\, and gender and LGBTQI+ theory.\nAmong others\, the exhibition features the works of Miroslav Kraljević\, Vlaho Bukovac\, Milivoj Uzelac\, Vera Fisher\, Josip Račić\, Vlasta Delimar\, Nasta Rojc and Ksenija Kantoci\, created in the media of painting\, sculpture\, photography\, video and art installations. On this occasion\, attempts will be made to challenge the dominant discourse and offer space to art and artists who have historically been marginalized\, and to encourage a more inclusive dialogue about the complexity of identity\, (re)presentation and power dynamics in the art world.\nThrough this exhibition\, which runs until September 14\, Kortil Gallery presents its summer exhibition program to the domestic and foreign audience. The program is realized in collaboration with the National Museum of Modern Art\, which is closed until 2026 due to the renovation of the Vranyczany-Dobrinović Palace.

SUMMARY:Igor Grubić: Untitled (The Zebra Crossing) – renovation urban intervention
DESCRIPTION:In February 1999\, Igor Grubić marked a zebra crossing between two buildings in Kružna ulica in Rijeka\, thus introducing the recognizable element of an urban traffic zone to this pedestrian alley off Korzo. The zebra crossing connects two clubs used by two entirely different generations\, with the entrance doors located opposite each other. The first is the Palach Club\, the iconic gathering place for young people\, and the other is the pensioners’ club. The zebra crossing thus acts as a transgenerational bridge\, connecting the old and the young\, highlighting the importance of dialogue and mutual respect.\nUntitled (The Zebra Crossing) by Igor Grubić was created as part of an exhibition featuring three authors (Igor Grubić\, Milomir Repac and Igor Zlobec)\, organized by “Otvoreni krug” association. It has been refreshed once again as part of the MMSU exhibition Gestures of Activation.

SUMMARY:IGOR GRUBIĆ: Gestures of Activation – Works in Public Space
DESCRIPTION:Public engagement is one of the fundamental stimuli of Grubić’s work\, as underlined in the title of his first retrospective solo exhibition in Rijeka. He is preoccupied with the subject of social turmoil in the nineties\, paying special attention to the processes of transition and privatisation\, the burden of wartime destruction and responsibility of individuals in active social changemaking. His critically directed considerations are thus closely related to empowering civil disobedience\, the implementation of different activist strategies of agitation and infiltration into the public space. Penetrating the soft tissue of pacifist yet unnerving critique\, Grubić represents a peculiar example of artistic activism relying on the spirit of guerrilla-anarchist actions\, in the wake of the legacies of historical avant-gardes and conceptual practices from the sixties and seventies\, which stepped out into the streets to express institutional critique and desire for direct communication with the public.
